Terry Date produced, as he had the first three albums. It was the last Deftones record he worked on until Ohms in 2020, and at a reported cost of $2.5 million it is counted among the most expensive albums ever made.
Most of the songs sit on Stephen Carpenter's low G# tuning, but they pull in different directions, and the record holds several separate ideas at once. "Lucky You" is a dark, quiet piece of trip hop with DJ Crook from Chino Moreno's side project Team Sleep and Rey Osburn of Tinfed; "Anniversary of an Uninteresting Event" is carried by a grand piano and a toy piano. "Minerva" is usually called shoegaze, and it is the track later writers point to as the direction the band would keep exploring.
It entered the Billboard 200 at number two and the Canadian chart at number one, selling 167,000 copies in its first American week, and the RIAA certified it gold on 7 July 2003. It did not match White Pony, though, and the label called it a commercial disappointment; the reviews were split at the time. The running order here is the original's as printed.
