Liner Notes
Purpendicular is a fifteenth album of restart on which, after Ritchie Blackmore’s departure, Deep Purple gained an entirely new bearing through the arrival of the master Steve Morse. Keeping the thick core of hard rock, Morse’s guitar moves more fluidly and variously, and the songs gain a light twist and rich space. A record filled with new vitality.
From the unique development of the opener “Vavoom: Ted the Mechanic” and the grand lyricism of “Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming” to the expanse of “The Aviator” and the playfulness of “A Castle Full of Rascals,” every song is full of fresh appeal, while a cut like “The Purpendicular Waltz” conveys Morse’s character. With the core of Ian Gillan’s voice, Jon Lord’s keyboards and Ian Paice’s drums colliding with a new guitarist, the band does not stop at mere reproduction of the past. Its great significance lies in powerfully moving its long history forward without fearing change. Announcing a radiant opening of a new chapter, it is a fresh, fulfilling hard-rock record.
