LINER NOTES
LANGUAGE
Your Filthy Little Mouth was the fourth full-length album by David Lee Roth, made after he had moved from Los Angeles to New York and released on Reprise. He brought in Nile Rodgers, the former mastermind of Chic, as producer, took the guitarist Terry Kilgore as his main songwriting partner and otherwise relied on seasoned session players. The album was recorded and mixed at The Hit Factory, with John Regan on bass, Richard Hilton on keyboards and programming, and Tony Beard, Larry Aberman and Ray Brinker sharing the drums. Kilgore co-wrote most of the songs with Roth. The styles range widely: "Cheatin' Heart Cafe" is a country duet with Travis Tritt, "No Big 'Ting" a reggae song with the Jamaican rapper Mitchielous, "A Little Luck" and "Hey, You Never Know" bring horns and girl-group backing vocals, "Experience" leans toward lounge music, and Roth also covers "Night Life", a song Willie Nelson co-wrote. Steve Hunter, who had played on the previous album, adds rhythm guitar to "A Little Luck". The album closes with an "Urban NYC Mix" of "You're Breathin' It". It was released on 8 March 1994. Billboard's review called it, for all its jumping between genres, his most enjoyable album in years, and credited Rodgers's production. The first single, "She's My Machine", climbed to number 12 on Billboard's Album Rock Tracks chart, but the album reached only number 78 on the Billboard 200, where it stayed for two weeks, number 28 in the UK and number 26 on Japan's Oricon albums chart. In 2025 Rhino included it with his four other Warner records in the box set The Warner Recordings 1985-1994.
