LINER NOTES
LANGUAGE
The first record Glenn Danzig made with Rick Rubin, after the Misfits and Samhain. It was recorded between September 1987 and April 1988 at Atlantic Recording Studios and Chung King in New York, released on 30 August 1988, and it was the first release on Def American Recordings, the label Rubin had just started. The band is Glenn Danzig on vocals, John Christ on guitar, Eerie Von on bass and Chuck Biscuits on drums. The account is that Danzig made bringing Von over from Samhain a condition of signing. The sound is the opposite of Samhain's rawness: heavy, blues-rooted riffing under a voice that sings the melody plainly. "Twist of Cain", "Am I Demon" and "Mother" are where that is clearest, and a live video for "Mother" in heavy rotation on MTV in 1993 delivered the album to a general audience years after the fact. The running order here is the original's as printed.
