LINER NOTES
LANGUAGE
It was released on 18 November 1996 on Music for Nations, the band's first record for that label, and recorded between September and November 1995 at DEP International Studios in Birmingham with Kit Woolven producing alongside the band.
It grafts the vocabulary of Victorian gothic fiction and the vampire story onto black metal's speed and a keyboard grandeur, and many take it as the album on which the band's style arrived whole. The pairing of Sarah Jezebel Deva's voice against Dani Filth's tearing delivery is settled here too. Cronos of Venom appears on "Haunted Shores".
It is also the album of the line-up with Stuart Anstis on guitar, Nicholas Barker on drums and Damien Gregori on keyboards. Nine tracks, 53 minutes and 13 seconds. A thirtieth-anniversary edition followed from Music for Nations on 30 October 2026, its deluxe CD housed in a numbered coffin-shaped box with "Hell Awaits" and "Carmilla's Masque" added as bonus tracks.
