LINER NOTES
LANGUAGE
This is the fourth album by the band from Savannah, released on 18 December 2015 through Abraxan Hymns, the label they founded themselves. It is the first record they made after the bus crash in England in 2012 and the first with Sebastian Thomson on drums and Nick Jost on bass. It is also the last with Pete Adams, who left in 2017.
Writing began early in 2014 and Dave Fridmann recorded and mixed it between March and May 2015 at Tarbox Road Studio in Cassadaga, New York. Choosing him mattered: the record has his particular compressed, fully saturated loudness set against a wide open reverb. Whatever the circumstances behind it, the music is brighter than the two albums before it and the melodies are drawn more sharply.
It came out on CD, vinyl, cassette and download, the cassette a limited item given away with CD and LP purchases at participating shops. Four singles followed, each a 12-inch picture disc with artwork by Marald Van Haasteren: "Chlorine & Wine" on 28 August 2015 and "Shock Me" on 15 November, the latter nominated for the Grammy for best metal performance. The last two came in December 2017, "Try to Disappear" with a 2016 live recording from the Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles and "Morningstar" with a demo.
