Backyard Babies, along with The Hellacopters and Hardcore Superstar, are a symbolic presence of this Nordic rock movement. Backyard Babies went beyond being a mere revival band; they fused the melancholy peculiar to Northern Europe with explosive energy to build a worldwide fanbase.

2. The Dawn: Sprouting in Nässjö and the Tyrant Era (1987 - 1989)

2.1 The Birthplace: The Stifling Feeling and Creativity of Nässjö

The origin of the band lies in Nässjö, a railway town located in the Småland region of southern Sweden. With a population of less than 20,000, the town offered little entertainment for young people, resulting in a stifling atmosphere. However, as with many rock legends, boredom became the wellspring of creativity. In 1987, teenagers attending a local school gathered to form the band "Tyrant".

2.2 Activities of Tyrant and Demo Recordings

The initial lineup was different from the classic lineup that would come later.

In 1989, a decisive turning point arrived for the band. The frontman, Tobias Fischer, left the band. Fischer later succeeded as a professional photographer and web designer in Stockholm, maintaining his relationship with the band by being involved in Backyard Babies' artwork and website creation.

Following Fischer's departure, the band underwent a radical reorganization. Johan Blomqvist, who had been playing guitar, switched to bass, and Nicke Borg joined as the new vocalist. Nicke took on not only vocals but also rhythm guitar, establishing the band's twin-guitar setup. Simultaneously with this reorganization, the band changed its name to "Backyard Babies".

3.2 The Legendary EP "Something to Swallow" (1991)

In 1991, the band released their first official recording, the self-produced EP "Something to Swallow" (Opus 1 Productions). This 12-inch EP contained 5 tracks, and songs like "Strange Kind of Attitude" and "Kickin' Up Dust" would become the core of their later debut album. This EP was covered by domestic and international music media and fanzines, becoming an important catalyst for making Backyard Babies' presence known in the underground scene.

3.3 Major Deal and "Diesel & Power" (1994)

Following the EP's success, they secured a contract with the Swedish independent label "Megarock Records" in 1993. Then, in 1994, their highly anticipated debut full-length album "Diesel & Power" was released.

• Musicality: Compared to their later works, this album had a stronger Blues flavor and was somewhat more mid-tempo and groove-oriented. Including their fashion and artwork, they inherited the aesthetics of late 80s LA Metal and Sleaze Rock while wearing the cold atmosphere unique to Northern Europe.

After the album's release, the band left their hometown of Nässjö and relocated their base to the capital, Stockholm. This was an inevitable step towards aiming for greater success, but at the same time, it led Backyard Babies into new trials.

4. Stagnation and Extracurricular Activities: The Shadow of The Hellacopters (1995-1997)

4.1 Deadlock in Stockholm

After moving to Stockholm, the band did not experience smooth sailing right away. Due to adjusting to the new environment, relationships with the label, and exploring their musical direction, Backyard Babies entered a period of stagnation from 1995 to 1996. During this time, they performed sporadically, such as serving as the opening act for "Demolition 23.", a band formed by former Hanoi Rocks member Michael Monroe, but the situation continued where the band's next step was unclear.

4.2 Dregen Joins The Hellacopters

During this period of stagnation, guitarist Dregen hit it off with Nicke Andersson, the drummer of Entombed, and formed "The Hellacopters" as a side project. Initially just a project, their 1996 debut album "Supershitty to the Max!" achieved explosive success, including winning a Swedish Grammis, causing Dregen's activities to shift heavily towards The Hellacopters.

Dregen participated up to The Hellacopters' second album "Payin' the Dues" (1997) and accompanied them on large-scale tours, including opening for KISS. During this time, Backyard Babies was effectively on hiatus, and there were even whispers of an impending breakup.

4.3 Decision and Return

However, the grueling touring life with two bands exhausted Dregen mentally and physically. He was forced to make a decision that he "had to focus on one band," and ultimately chose his starting point, Backyard Babies. Dregen's full return gave new vitality to the other members (Nicke, Johan, and Peder), and the band began a furious, rapid advance.

5. The Golden Era: Revolution by "Total 13" (1998-2000)

5.1 The Making of "Total 13" and Sound Transformation

In 1998, the band released their second album "Total 13" through MVG Records. This album is not only considered the masterpiece of Backyard Babies' career but also became a monumental work in the history of Scandinavian rock.

• Producer: Thomas Skogsberg was appointed. Known for producing death metal bands like Entombed, his appointment brought an intensely distorted guitar sound and a raw, aggressive sound image to the album.

6. On the Shoulders of Giants: Tour with AC/DC and "Making Enemies Is Good" (2000-2002)

In 2000, Backyard Babies received one of the greatest honors of their career. They were chosen as the support act for the European leg of rock giants AC/DC's "Stiff Upper Lip World Tour."

Fueled by the experience gained from touring with AC/DC, they released their third album, "Making Enemies Is Good," in 2001.

• Sound Evolution: They organized the chaotic punk sound of the previous album and evolved into a heavier, darker sound with a sense of scale capable of handling stadium rock. Critics described it as "Controlled Chaos."

Their 5th overall album, "People Like People Like People Like Us," was produced by Nicke Andersson (The Hellacopters). Being produced by an old friend who used to be in a band with Dregen brought their sound back to a more straightforward, garage-rock origin.

In 2008, the band left the major label they had been with for years, established their own independent label "Billion Dollar Babies," and released their 6th album, "Backyard Babies."

• Meaning of the Self-Title: It embodied a return to their roots and a strong will to control their career themselves.
• Tracks: It featured provocative rock numbers typical of Backyard Babies, such as "Fuck Off and Die" and "Degenerated." "Degenerated" was included in "Guitar Hero World Tour."

Dregen stated, "The last 20 years, especially the latter 10, were non-stop. To keep the band going, we needed to stop and recharge." 9. Solo Activities and the Era of Exploration (2010-2014)

During the hiatus, the members pursued their respective musical interests, which later brought new depth when the band resumed.

9.1 Nicke Borg Homeland

Frontman Nicke Borg launched a solo project, "Nicke Borg Homeland." His solo work, in contrast to the high-energy rock of Backyard Babies, delved deep into Americana, Country, and Folk elements. Introspective lyrics and melodies showing deep reverence for Johnny Cash and Steve Earle reaffirmed to the world his talent as a songwriter.

• Solo Album "Dregen" (2013): Released his first solo album. Nicke Andersson and Danko Jones made guest appearances, showing a more bluesy and funky side.
• Publishing an Autobiography: Published his autobiography "Dregen: Självbiografin," which became a bestseller in Sweden.

9.3 Other Members

Johan Blomqvist and Peder Carlsson also waited for the band to resume while enriching their musical activities and personal lives. Johan worked as an artist for gear manufacturers like EBS, honing his bass playing.

10. The Return: Reunion and 30th Anniversary (2015-2019)

10.1 Restarting with "Four By Four" (2015)

Breaking five years of silence, the band declared their return to action in 2015. Their 7th album "Four By Four," released in August of that year, carried a title symbolizing "the 4th masterpiece by 4 members" and the power of a 4x4 off-road vehicle.

• Single: The lead single "Th1rt3en or Nothing" was a song that fused the classic Backyard Babies groove with the melodic sense cultivated during their solo activities, meeting fans' expectations.

In 2019, they released their 8th studio album, "Sliver & Gold," via Century Media to commemorate their 30th anniversary. They appointed Chips Kiesbye of the Swedish punk band Sator as producer (also known for producing The Hellacopters). Singles like "Shovin' Rocks" and "Good Morning Midnight" were the ultimate culmination of the "Backyard Babies sound," where early impulses and 30 years of mastery coexisted.

11. Current Status and Future (2020-2025)

11.1 The Pandemic and Dregen Rejoining The Hellacopters

After the "Sliver & Gold" tour, the world was hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. While live activities were restricted, Dregen rejoined The Hellacopters again as an official member. The Hellacopters released the album "Eyes of Oblivion" in 2022 and have been carrying out large-scale activities.

11.2 Current Status (2024-2025)

In a 2024 interview, Dregen spoke about the current state of Backyard Babies: "The band hasn't broken up, and there's no falling out between the members. It's just that I'm currently busy with The Hellacopters, so we're temporarily slowing things down. In the future, we will definitely do something as Backyard Babies again."

The members are still in touch today, and officially they are on a "Hiatus," but fans confidently wait for Backyard Babies to "restart the engine" anytime. As the history of Backyard Babies proves, they never die; they are always in the backyard preparing for the next party.
