Liner Notes
The self-titled Avenged Sevenfold is the fourth album, on which the band boldly widened its range of expression. Building on the heavy rock established previously, it boldly takes in orchestra and varied styles, painting a different world in each song. Released on Warner, it debuted at number four on the US Billboard 200, cementing the band's popularity. It is also the last studio album on which The Rev played drums.
"Critical Acclaim" and "Almost Easy" combine aggression with hooks, and "Afterlife" became a signature song with its grand arrangement. Experimental, wide-ranging songs also line up, like the macabre orchestral "A Little Piece of Heaven" and the country-flavored "Dear God." A structure that prioritized diversity over unity drew mixed opinion, but it vividly showed the band's ambition to resist any single frame. With technique and playfulness together, it is one of the most distinctive records in the career.
