At the Gates' eighth album is the first since At War with Reality with co-founding guitarist Anders Björler, whose return in October 2022 restored, as Tomas Lindberg noted, the line-up that wrote Terminal Spirit Disease, Slaughter of the Soul and At War with Reality. The Björler twins shared the songwriting, and after The Nightmare of Being the band went back towards their roots; Lindberg called the result a mix of Slaughter of the Soul and At War with Reality. The songs were more or less finished by mid-December 2023, when Lindberg was diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma, a rare cancer of the mouth and palate. The band went ahead with sessions at Fascination Street Studios with Jens Bogren in February and March 2024, meaning to add the vocals later. That never happened, so the album uses the takes Lindberg had recorded with Per Stålberg before his surgery; he wrote that the final vocals were cut in one day, mostly in single takes, the day before the operation. Charlie Storm made the intro of "The Fever Mask" and Fredrik Wallenberg sings as a guest on "Det Oerhörda". The working title was The Dissonant Void; around April 2024, after surgery and his first radiation treatments, Lindberg chose the title it bears, and the band followed his wishes on the title, the mix, the running order and the artwork, made with Robert Samsonowitz. The release waited on Lindberg's recovery; his health took a turn for the worse in May 2025, and he died on 16 September 2025, aged 52. The album was announced on 20 February 2026 with a tribute video for "The Fever Mask" assembled by Patric Ullaeus, and came out on Century Media on 24 April 2026, the same day as Trooper Entertainment's Japanese edition. It entered the Swedish albums chart at No. 1, a first for the band, and reached No. 8 in Germany, No. 18 in Finland and No. 5 on the UK Rock & Metal Albums Chart. Costin Chioreanu's white-ink animated videos for all twelve songs were completed on 8 September 2026 as a full-album film.
