LINER NOTES
LANGUAGE
With Alf Svensson gone, songwriting passed to the brothers Anders and Jonas Björler, and Martin Larsson, formerly of House of Usher, took the second guitar. Anders Björler has said that when they began work on these songs in 1993 they took a straighter approach in lyrics and music, writing simple rock-shaped songs built on verse, bridge and chorus. Tomas Lindberg explained that the first two albums had been so technical and complex that the musicianship sometimes got in the way, so on this one they chose to strip away the excess and become simpler, more direct and more brutal; he called it the embryo from which Slaughter of the Soul was born. It was recorded in February 1994 at Studio Fredman in Gothenburg with Fredrik Nordström; Anders Björler remembers it as the first recording in the new studio, with Nordström still new to studio work. Cello and violin colour "The Swarm" and "And the World Returned". There are only six new songs, and it was meant to be a mini-album; to them the band added three live recordings made at Magasinet in Gothenburg on 6 February 1994, "All Life Ends", "The Burning Darkness" and "Kingdom Gone". In August 1994 the members said they had not wanted fans to pay full price for a handful of new songs, so they picked one song from each earlier record; Louder later reported that the label had the record padded out to album length. In the same interview Lindberg said the reviews had been mostly good, with complaints that it was too short and the live tracks filler, but that it had been groundbreaking for the band. It was their last album for Peaceville: Lindberg later said the label could not afford to help them grow, and that being stranded in England for about a week after a tour was the final straw. In 2007 Anders Björler named it his favourite At the Gates album. The 2003 reissue added three live tracks recorded at Rock City in Nottingham for MTV's Headbangers Ball. Decibel inducted it into its Hall of Fame in 2023, and in May 2026 Peaceville issued a CD remastered by Dan Swanö.
