Liner Notes
Aura is a later second-era work on which ASIA carefully wove together the refined melody and expansive keyboard sound characteristic of the Payne era. Without leaning too far into grandiosity, it creates drama within the natural flow of the songs. Even while welcoming many guest musicians, the core of Geoff Downes’ keyboards and John Payne’s singing gives the whole work a consistent identity.
AOR melodic sense and progressive-rock color coexist naturally, and you can savor an ensemble arranged carefully to the details. By leaving tension even in gentle passages, the album gains a depth particular to mature melodic rock. Winning through the songs’ constructive beauty and the calm breathing of the playing rather than relying on flashy hooks alone, it is a neat, rewarding record conveying the maturity of Payne-era ASIA, with Downes’ aesthetic — which has supported the long career — a firm axis here too.
