Liner Notes
The Karelian Isthmus is a vivid debut on which Amorphis combines heavy, sinking riffs, low roars and a desolate, cold air. Emerging from Finland, it still keeps orthodox death metal as its foundation, different from the later folk and progressive expanse. Yet its guitar melodies and the songs’ distinctive atmosphere already clearly hold a sure consciousness to draw a story.
From the development from the opening instrumental to “The Gathering” and the aggression of “Grail’s Mysteries” to a cut like “Warriors Trial,” every song is engaging, while cuts like “Black Embrace” and “The Exile of the Sons of Uisliu” convey the work’s fullness. Tomi Koivusaari’s low, heavy death vocals are powerfully in sharp form throughout. A record whose themes evoking war and myth gave a sure depth to the cold, heavy sound. It became Amorphis’s important origin, bringing rich lyricism and vivid scene-painting into death metal’s pure aggression. A powerful, ambitious debut in which the budding of the great change and growth into a band representing Finland can already be felt — a record for knowing the band’s starting point.
