Liner Notes
I’m a Rebel is the second album on which Accept, before completing its later hard-edged style, tried a more melodic, broader direction. With Udo Dirkschneider’s distinctive voice set beside songs sung by bassist Peter Baltes, a particular wavering and variety arise. It is a work particular to a transitional period, still in the midst of searching.
From the title track “I’m a Rebel,” with its straightforward hook, and the calm face of “No Time to Lose” to the dashing “Thunder and Lightning” and “China Lady” and “Save Us,” the songs reflect another appeal of the band. It is intriguing that a melodic, many-sided side, unlike the later all-aggression image, comes to the fore. Precisely because it is a developing work, the seeds of the steel-hard sound Accept would later acquire can be heard throughout. Still rough, sure playing and an ambition to explore direction show. It is a valuable record from the period when the band was searching for its own character.
