Touchdown

『Touchdown』は、U.D.O.が長年守ってきた正統派ヘヴィ・メタルの手触りを、力強く磨き上げた一枚だ。硬いギター・リフ、踏み込むようなリズム、ウド・ダークシュナイダーの独特の咆哮が、曲を始めた瞬間からバンドの輪郭をはっきりと決めていく。ベテランとなってなお、その硬派な芯は少しも揺るがない。 アメリカン・フットボールを思わせる表題どおり、全体には力強く前進する勢いがある。合唱が似合うサビ、鉄板のミドル・テンポ、そして加速するナンバーを交互に配置し、聴き手を休ませることなく最後まで運んでいく。様式に忠実でありながらも、決して鈍重に陥らず、現役感のある力強さを保っている点が心地よい。 流行を追いかけるのではなく、自分たちが最も得意とするジャーマン・ヘヴィ・メタルを、迷いなく鳴らし切っている。ドイツ・メタルの強さと親しみやすさを、同時に感じられる作品だ。疾走するナンバーと重厚なミドル・テンポ、そして大合唱を誘うコーラスという、U.D.O.が得意とする要素が、本作でも高い次元でまとまっている。長年のファンが期待する硬派なジャーマン・メタルが、全編に凝縮されているのだ。長いキャリアを重ねてもなお、ウド・ダークシュナイダーの情熱と個性が全く衰えていないことを、堂々と証明した充実の一枚と言える。

Touchdown is a record on which U.D.O. powerfully polishes the feel of the traditional heavy metal it has long upheld. Hard guitar riffs, a driving rhythm and Udo Dirkschneider’s distinctive roar clearly set the band’s outline from the moment a song begins. Even as veterans, that hard-edged core does not waver in the least. True to a title recalling American football, there is a powerfully advancing momentum throughout. Placing sing-along-suited choruses, rock-solid mid-tempos and accelerating numbers in turn, it carries the listener to the end without rest. Faithful to its style yet never falling into heaviness for its own sake, it feels good that it keeps a current-day strength. Rather than chasing trends, it sounds out, without hesitation, the German heavy metal it does best. It is a work that lets you feel the strength and accessibility of German metal at once. Proving with confidence that Udo Dirkschneider’s passion and character have not faded at all even deep into a long career, it is a fulfilling record.
