Animal House

『Animal House』は、ウド・ダークシュナイダーがACCEPTを離れて始動させたU.D.O.のデビュー作だ。彼の鋭く独特な歌声を中心に、硬いリフと直線的なビートを積み上げ、余計な回り道をせず、短いフレーズと大きなコーラスで力を押し出していく。新たな看板を掲げながらも、その音楽性はACCEPT直系の硬派なヘヴィ・メタルである。 表題曲“Animal House”や“They Want War”では、ヘヴィ・メタルの基本的な重量と、ウドの声が持つ緊張感が強く結び付く。“Go Back to Hell”“In the Darkness”“Warrior”のような曲でも、鋼鉄のリフと力強いシャウトが一貫して作品を牽引していく。速い曲もミドル・テンポも、迷いのない攻撃性で貫かれている。 新しいバンド名の下でも、ウド・ダークシュナイダー本人の個性が少しも揺るがないことを示した、堂々たる出発点だ。ACCEPT時代に築いた様式を受け継ぎつつ、それを自らの旗印として鳴らし直した意志が全編に表れている。“Black Widow”“We Want It Loud”のような曲でも、硬いリフと大合唱コーラスが一貫して作品を牽引していく。ジャーマン・ヘヴィ・メタルの正統を受け継ぐ、力強いデビュー作と言える。

Animal House is the debut of U.D.O., the band Udo Dirkschneider launched after leaving Accept. Centered on his sharp, distinctive voice, it stacks hard riffs and a linear beat, taking no needless detours and pushing its force out with short phrases and big choruses. Under a new banner, the music is hard-edged heavy metal directly descended from Accept. In the title track “Animal House” and “They Want War,” heavy metal’s basic weight and the tension of Udo’s voice bind strongly, while cuts like “Go Back to Hell,” “In the Darkness” and “Warrior” consistently drive the record with steel riffs and powerful shouts. Fast songs and mid-tempos alike are carried by an unhesitating aggression. Showing that Udo Dirkschneider’s own character does not waver in the least under a new band name, it is a confident starting point. Inheriting the style built in the Accept years while re-sounding it as his own banner, its will shows throughout — a powerful debut carrying on the German heavy-metal tradition.
