Once Bitten...Twice...

『Once Bitten...Twice...』は、SHYが高く抜けるヴォーカル、鮮やかなギター、鍵盤の色彩を結び付けたデビュー作だ。曲にはNWOBHMの硬さを残しつつ、サビへ向かうメロディの強さがはっきりとある。イギリスのバーミンガム出身のバンドが、その才能を世に示した出発点である。 “Deep Water”“Take It All the Way”“Once Bitten, Twice Shy”といった楽曲では、アップテンポ曲の勢いとバラードの叙情性が並び、バンドは早い段階から幅を見せている。ヴォーカリストのトニー・ミルズと、ギタリストのスティーヴ・ハリス（アイアン・メイデンのベーシストとは別人）が、早くもバンドの核を形作っている。“Give Me a Chance”“Chained by Desire”のような楽曲にも、初期らしい瑞々しい魅力が息づいている。本作は1983年に発表されNWOBHM後期の英国シーンに新風を吹き込んでおり、“Think of Me”“Tonight”のような楽曲にも初期らしい瑞々しい魅力が息づいている。ハード・ロックとメロディアスなAORの要素を併せ持つ、バンドの原型がここにある。英国ハード・ロックの伝統を受け継ぎながら、より華やかな方向へ踏み出した一枚である。

Once Bitten...Twice... is the debut on which SHY bound high, clear vocals, vivid guitar and keyboard color. While the songs keep the hardness of NWOBHM, there is a clear strength of melody heading toward the choruses. It is the starting point on which the band from Birmingham, England, showed its talent to the world. On “Deep Water,” “Take It All the Way” and “Once Bitten, Twice Shy,” the momentum of up-tempo songs and the lyricism of ballads stand side by side, and the band shows range from an early stage. Vocalist Tony Mills and guitarist Steve Harris (a different person from Iron Maiden’s bassist) already form the band’s core. Songs like “Give Me a Chance” and “Chained by Desire” breathe an early, fresh appeal too. It is a record that, while inheriting the tradition of British hard rock, stepped toward a more gorgeous direction.
