『Taken by Force』は、SCORPIONSがハード・ロックの鋭さと、よりドラマティックなメロディを同時に追求した第5作だ。ウリ・ジョン・ロートのギターはクラシカルな感覚を帯びながら自由に飛び、クラウス・マイネの歌は曲に熱と哀感を与えている。 冒頭“Steamrock Fever”の勢い、“We'll Burn the Sky”の大きな起伏、そして“The Sails of Charon”の緊張感が、アルバムの魅力を強く形作る。“He's a Woman – She's a Man”のドライブ感や“Born to Touch Your Feelings”の叙情も、収録曲に幅を与えている。攻撃性とメロディの両立が、これまで以上に高い水準で実現されている。 ウリ・ジョン・ロート在籍期の終盤にあたる本作は、初期の実験精神と、後年のメロディック・ハードへつながる要素を、同時に備えた過渡期の一枚だ。バンドが世界的な飛躍の直前で到達した表現力の高さが、はっきりと刻まれている。“The Riot of Your Time”“Your Light”のような曲でも、鋭いギターと劇的な歌メロが結び付き、アルバムに一貫した緊張感を与えている。初期SCORPIONSの集大成にふさわしい、充実したハード・ロック作品と言える。

Taken by Force is the fifth album on which Scorpions pursue hard rock’s sharpness and more dramatic melody at once. Uli Jon Roth’s guitar flies freely with a classical sense, and Klaus Meine’s singing gives the songs heat and melancholy. The drive of the opener “Steamrock Fever,” the large swells of “We’ll Burn the Sky” and the tension of “The Sails of Charon” strongly shape the album’s appeal, while the drive of “He’s a Woman – She’s a Man” and the lyricism of “Born to Touch Your Feelings” give the songs breadth. The union of aggression and melody is realized at a higher level than before. Falling at the end of the Uli Jon Roth era, the record is a transitional work carrying both the early experimental spirit and elements leading toward the melodic hard rock to come. The expressive height the band reached just before its worldwide leap is clearly inscribed — a fulfilling hard-rock record that fittingly caps early Scorpions.
