Savage Souls is a work on which MYSTIC PROPHECY foregrounded low-chugging riffs, hard rhythm and powerful singing. While keeping power metal’s speed, the songs do not become gaudier than necessary, prioritizing the strength of heavy-metal push. It is a record on which, after Gus G.’s departure, the band strengthened a harder direction. On “Shadows Beyond My Soul,” “Master of Sins” and “Savage Souls,” memorable phrases and choruses are placed within aggressive songs, and the whole album has a consistent tension. Songs like “Evil Empires,” “Sins and Sorrows” and “Into the Fire” breathe the band’s full playing too. Rather than brute force, they compete on the weight of the riffs and the outline of the melody. It is a full record answering those who seek hard-nosed heavy metal.
