Metal Church

『Metal Church』は、METAL CHURCHが正統派メタルの重さとスラッシュの攻撃性を同じ場所で結び付けた、記念すべきデビュー作だ。カート・ヴァンダーフーフが書く太く複雑なリフを土台に、デイヴィッド・ウェインの高く荒々しいヴォーカルが曲へ独特の緊張感を注ぎ込む。カート・ヴァンダーフーフとクレイグ・ウェルズのツイン・ギター、デューク・エリクソンのベース、カーク・アリントンのドラムが生む一体感も、初期サウンドの重要な要素だ。80年代前半のUSメタル・アンダーグラウンドから現れた彼らは、この一枚で早くも唯一無二の硬質な個性を提示した。 “Beyond the Black”“Gods of Wrath”“(My Favorite) Nightmare”といった楽曲は、単なる速度競争に留まらない重量と暗さを備えている。“Metal Church”“Hitman”ではリフを引きずるようなヘヴィネスが際立ち、ディープ・パープルのカヴァー“Highway Star”では速さと歌心を両立させる懐の深さも見せる。派手なメロディに寄りかからず、ギターの刻みとリズムの圧力で押し切る構成は、のちのアメリカン・パワー・メタルの一つの原型となった。荒削りながらも完成度は高く、80年代メタルの隠れた重要作として今なお語り継がれる、強靭なスタート地点である。

Metal Church is the landmark debut on which METAL CHURCH joined the weight of traditional metal and the aggression of thrash in the same place. Built on the thick, intricate riffs Kurt Vanderhoof writes, David Wayne’s high, raw vocals pour a distinctive tension into the songs. The chemistry of Vanderhoof and Craig Wells on twin guitars, Duke Erickson on bass and Kirk Arrington on drums is another key part of the early sound. Emerging from the early-1980s US metal underground, the band presented a one-of-a-kind, hard-edged identity right away. Tracks such as “Beyond the Black,” “Gods of Wrath” and “(My Favorite) Nightmare” carry a weight and darkness that go beyond mere speed. On “Metal Church” and “Hitman” a dragging, riff-heavy heaviness stands out, while the Deep Purple cover “Highway Star” shows the depth to balance speed with melody. Rather than leaning on flashy melody, the writing pushes through with cutting guitars and rhythmic pressure, becoming one prototype for later American power metal. Rough yet accomplished, it is still spoken of as a hidden landmark of 1980s metal — a powerful starting point.
