『Voice of Reason』は、HAREM SCAREMが持ち前の美しいコーラスと、緻密な演奏を保ちながらも、以前よりもはるかにダークで、複雑な曲調へと大胆に広げた、意欲的な第3作だ。時代はグランジやオルタナティヴが台頭した90年代半ば。バンドもまた、その空気を敏感に反映し、よりヘヴィで内省的な方向へと踏み込んでいる。ハリー・ヘスの歌は滑らかだが、楽曲全体には、張り詰めた緊張感が漂っている。 表題曲“Voice of Reason”の重厚さ、“Blue”の叙情、そして“Warming a Frozen Rose”のドラマ性まで、収録曲はいずれも深い陰影を帯びている。“Let It Go”“Candle”のような曲も、バンドの新たな一面を鮮やかに示している。ギターの細かな動きと、リズムの変化が、メロディを単純なポップさへと流させない。 前2作の華やかなメロディック・ハード・ロック路線から、大きく舵を切った、賛否を呼ぶ実験作だ。しかし、その挑戦的な姿勢と、楽曲の高い質は、時を経て再評価されている。メロディック・ロックの枠組みを大きく広げようとした、バンドの尽きせぬ探究心が伝わる、重要な一枚と言える。ヘスとレスペランスの才気が光る。

Voice of Reason is an ambitious third album on which Harem Scarem, while keeping its native beautiful choruses and precise playing, boldly widens into a far darker, more complex style than before. The era was the mid-1990s, when grunge and alternative rose. The band too sensitively reflected that air, stepping into a heavier, more introspective direction. Harry Hess’s singing is smooth, yet a taut tension drifts through the whole. From the weight of the title track “Voice of Reason” and the lyricism of “Blue” to the drama of “Warming a Frozen Rose,” every song carries deep shading, while cuts like “Let It Go” and “Candle” vividly show a new side of the band. The fine movement of the guitar and the changes of rhythm keep the melody from drifting into simple pop. An experimental work that drew mixed views, steering greatly from the flamboyant melodic-hard-rock direction of the first two albums, its challenging stance and high song quality have been reappraised over time. Conveying the band’s inexhaustible inquiry to greatly widen the frame of melodic rock, it is an important record where the talent of Hess and Lesperance shines.
