Rubber

『Rubber』は、HAREM SCAREMが従来のメロディック・ハード・ロックの様式を、あえて少し崩し、タイトなビートや、オルタナティヴ寄りの新しい質感を、大胆に取り入れた作品だ。バンドはこの時期、一時的に「Rubber」という別名義を用いており、その名の通り、これまでとは異なる、より柔軟で実験的なサウンドを追求している。大きく歌える、印象的なメロディは残しつつも、アレンジ自体はより簡潔で、ギターの鳴り方にも、新しい感触が加わっている。 モダン・ロックの影響を強く感じさせる、乾いたギター・サウンドと、タイトなリズムが、作品全体の新しい肌触りを作り出している。従来のきらびやかなAOR的サウンドとは、明確に一線を画す内容だ。しかし、その変化の中にあっても、耳に残るフックを作り出す巧みさと、確かな演奏の精度は、少しも失われていない。 バンドが、自分たちの音楽的な輪郭を、意識的に大きく押し広げようとした、興味深い時期を捉えた一枚だ。看板を一度下ろしてまで、新しい表現に挑んだ、その実験精神は特筆に値する。HAREM SCAREMの、また別の可能性を垣間見せる、挑戦的でユニークな作品と言える。時代への鋭い応答が刻まれている。

Rubber is a work on which Harem Scarem deliberately breaks its former melodic-hard-rock style a little and boldly takes in tight beats and a new, alternative-leaning texture. In this period the band temporarily used the separate name “Rubber,” and true to it, pursues a more flexible, experimental sound different from before. Keeping big, singable, striking melody, the arrangement itself is more concise, and a new feel is added to how the guitar sounds. A dry guitar sound and tight rhythm, strongly suggesting the influence of modern rock, create a new feel for the whole work. Content clearly drawing a line from the former glittering AOR sound. Yet even within that change, the skill of creating memorable hooks and sure playing precision are not lost in the least. A record capturing an intriguing period in which the band consciously sought to greatly widen its own musical outline. Its experimental spirit, taking on new expression even by setting down its banner for a time, deserves special note. Glimpsing another possibility of Harem Scarem, it is a challenging, unique work — a sharp response to the era inscribed within.
