Change the World

本作『Change the World』は、HAREM SCAREMが得意とする、知的なコード進行、骨太で力強いギター、そして一度で記憶に残る大きなサビを、極めて高い完成度でまとめ上げた、充実したメロディック・ロック作品だ。ハリー・ヘスの透明感あふれる歌声と、ピート・レスペランスの表情豊かなギターは、長年にわたる共同作業ならではの、実に自然で、息の合った連携を見せている。 冒頭の表題曲“Change the World”の力強い推進力、“Aftershock”の攻撃性、そしてドラマティックな“The Death of Me”まで、収録曲はいずれも高い水準にある。“Fire & Gasoline”のキャッチーさ、“No Man's Land”のような曲も、バンドの豊かなメロディ・センスを伝えている。メロディック・ロックとしての、親しみやすさを存分に持ちながら、曲の内部には、細かなリズムの切り替えや、ハーモニーの工夫が、随所に凝らされている。 聴きやすさと、演奏の持つ確かな奥行きとを、同時に高い次元で満たしている点に、本作の大きな魅力がある。バンドが、なぜこれほど長きにわたり、世界中のファンから支持され続けてきたのか、その理由を改めて明確に示す一枚だ。ベテランとなってなお、その創作意欲と実力が全く衰えていないことを証明した、力強く充実した作品と言える。

Change the World is a fulfilling melodic-rock work on which Harem Scarem pulls together, at extremely high polish, the intelligent chord progressions, sturdy, powerful guitar and big choruses memorable at a single listen that it does best. Harry Hess’s translucent voice and Pete Lesperance’s expressive guitar show a truly natural, well-matched teamwork particular to long years of collaboration. From the powerful drive of the opening title track “Change the World” and the aggression of “Aftershock” to the dramatic “The Death of Me,” every song is of a high standard, while the catchiness of “Fire & Gasoline” and a cut like “No Man’s Land” convey the band’s rich melodic sense. Fully holding the accessibility of melodic rock, fine changes of rhythm and craft of harmony are worked into the songs throughout. Its great appeal lies in satisfying both accessibility and the sure depth of the playing at a high level at once. A record that again clearly shows why the band has kept the support of fans worldwide for so long. Proving that, even as veterans, their creative drive and ability have not dimmed at all, it is a powerful, fulfilling work.
