『It's Only Rock 'n' Roll』は、HARDCORE SUPERSTARが荒いギター、前のめりのビート、挑発的な歌を組み合わせた初期作だ。曲はストレートだが、フックの置き方にはグラム・ロックらしい華がある。スウェーデンのイェーテボリで結成されたバンドの、記念すべきデビュー・アルバムである。 勢いに任せながらも、ライヴで映えるフレーズが随所に仕込まれている。パンクの荒々しさと、80年代グラム・メタルの派手さを併せ持つそのスタイルは、当時のシーンの中でも独特の存在感を放っていた。バンドはヨッケ・ベルグを中心に80年代のグラム・メタルやハード・ロックへの愛情を90年代後半という時代の中で蘇らせようとし、モトリー・クルーやハノイ・ロックスといった先達の影響をパンク的な荒々しさで塗り替えたそのサウンドは後の作品群の土台となっている。商業的な成功こそまだ先だったが、バンドの揺るぎない個性はこの時点で明確に打ち出されている。まだ荒削りではあるものの、後にヨーロッパのスリージー・ロック・シーンを牽引することになるバンドの、その原型がすでにここにある。汗と煙の匂いがするロックンロールを求める時に似合う、力強い出発点だ。

It's Only Rock 'n' Roll is an early work on which HARDCORE SUPERSTAR combined rough guitar, a leaning-forward beat and provocative singing. The songs are straight, but the placement of the hooks has a glam-rock flair. It is the memorable debut album of the band, formed in Gothenburg, Sweden. While riding on momentum, phrases that shine live are planted throughout. That style, combining punk roughness and the flamboyance of 1980s glam metal, radiated a distinctive presence even within the scene of the time. Still rough though it is, the prototype of the band that would later lead Europe’s sleaze-rock scene is already here. It is a powerful starting point, suited to when you seek rock ’n’ roll that smells of sweat and smoke.
