『These Days』は、BON JOVIが、アリーナ向けの、あの大きな高揚感を残しながらも、より内省的で、現実的な言葉へと、深く踏み込んだ、意欲的な第6作だ。前作『Keep the Faith』での、成熟した方向性を、さらに推し進めており、90年代半ばの、社会の陰りや、大人の葛藤といった、重いテーマが、全編を貫いている。ジョン・ボン・ジョヴィの歌は、希望と疲労、反発と共感との間を、繊細に行き来していく。 冒頭“Hey God”の力強さ、キャッチーな“Something for the Pain”、大ヒットしたバラード“This Ain't a Love Song”、そして深い哀感を湛えた表題曲“These Days”まで、収録曲は、大きなメロディを持ちながらも、決して軽くはない、確かな深みを備えている。“Lie to Me”のような曲も、作品の内省的な魅力を伝えている。 派手な祝祭感よりも、人生の、より複雑で、影のある側面に、真正面から向き合った、大人のロック・アルバムだ。とりわけ欧州で高い評価を得た本作は、バンドの、ソングライターとしての、円熟した表現力を、色濃く示している。BON JOVIの、90年代中盤を代表する、深みと聴き応えに満ちた、充実作と言える。彼らの、音楽的な深化を感じさせる一枚だ。

These Days is an ambitious sixth album on which Bon Jovi, while keeping the great lift for arenas, steps deeply into more introspective, realistic words. Pushing the mature direction of the previous Keep the Faith further, heavy themes such as the shadow of mid-1990s society and grown-up conflict run throughout. Jon Bon Jovi’s singing delicately moves between hope and fatigue, resistance and empathy. From the power of the opener “Hey God” and the catchy “Something for the Pain” to the hit ballad “This Ain’t a Love Song” and the deeply sorrowful title track “These Days,” the songs hold big melody yet a sure depth that is by no means light, while a cut like “Lie to Me” conveys the work’s introspective appeal. A grown-up rock album that faces head-on the more complex, shadowed side of life, rather than flashy festivity. Highly praised especially in Europe, this album strongly shows the band’s mature expression as songwriters.
