『Keep the Faith』は、BON JOVIが、80年代の、あの祝祭的で華やかなイメージを、少し引き締め、より重いギターと、成熟した歌へと向かった、大きな転換作だ。プロデューサーに、ボブ・ロックを迎え、その重厚なプロダクションのもと、90年代という新しい時代に対応した、大人びたハード・ロックを打ち出している。ジョン・ボン・ジョヴィの声は、力強さを保ちながらも、曲ごとに、迷い、希望、そして関係の揺れを、より深く描いている。 冒頭“I Believe”の力強さ、前進的な表題曲“Keep the Faith”、そして感動的なバラードの名曲“Bed of Roses”の壮大な広がりまで、アルバムは、大きなフックと、深い内省とを、見事に同居させている。“In These Arms”の叙情、大作“Dry County”、そして“I'll Sleep When I'm Dead”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。バンドの、音楽的な成長が、はっきりと見て取れる。 華やかなだけの80年代的なスタイルから脱却し、より深みのある、大人のロック・バンドへと、力強く成長した姿を示した一枚だ。オリジナルの5人編成による、最後のスタジオ・アルバムとしても、バンドの、大きな変化を、鮮明に映し出している。過渡期の作品でありながらも、その内容は、極めて充実している。BON JOVIの、新たな成熟を告げた、力強く重要な一枚と言える。

Keep the Faith is a great transitional work on which Bon Jovi tightens the festive, flamboyant 1980s image a little and heads toward heavier guitar and mature singing. Welcoming producer Bob Rock, under his weighty production, it puts forward a grown-up hard rock adapted to the new era of the 1990s. Jon Bon Jovi’s voice, while keeping power, draws confusion, hope and the wavering of relationships more deeply from song to song. From the power of the opener “I Believe” and the forward-moving title track “Keep the Faith” to the grand expanse of the moving ballad classic “Bed of Roses,” the album beautifully makes big hooks and deep introspection coexist, while the lyricism of “In These Arms,” the epic “Dry County” and a cut like “I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead” convey the work’s fullness. The band’s musical growth can be clearly seen. A record showing a figure that broke away from the merely flamboyant 1980s style and grew powerfully into a deeper, grown-up rock band. As the last studio album with the original five-piece lineup, it vividly reflects the band’s great change. Though a transitional work, its content is extremely fulfilling. Announcing Bon Jovi’s new maturity, it is a powerful, important record.
