『7800° Fahrenheit』は、BON JOVIが、デビュー作の勢いを保ちつつ、より硬質なギターと、熱量の高いコーラスを、前面へと押し出した第2作だ。ジョン・ボン・ジョヴィの、まっすぐな歌と、リッチー・サンボラのギターは、若いバンドならではの、確かな切迫感を、楽曲に与えている。大成功の直前、成長の途上にある、バンドの熱いエネルギーを閉じ込めた一枚である。 冒頭“In and Out of Love”の勢い、叙情的なバラード“Only Lonely”、そして、日本のファンにとって特別な意味を持つ、名曲“Tokyo Road”まで、収録曲には、後の、あの世界的な大成功へとつながる、確かなメロディの強さが、すでに備わっている。“The Hardest Part Is the Night”“Silent Night”のような曲も、作品の魅力を伝えている。とりわけ“Tokyo Road”は、日本への親しみを込めた楽曲として、今なお愛されている。 洗練された完成度よりも、若さゆえの、生々しい勢いが、先に立つ場面も含めて、成長途上ならではの、熱い息吹を、そのまま感じ取ることができる点が本作の魅力だ。まだ発展途上ではあるが、次作『Slippery When Wet』での、あの爆発的な飛躍を、確かに予感させる内容となっている。BON JOVIの、初期の充実と、その成長の過程を示す、力強い一枚と言える。

7800° Fahrenheit is the second album on which Bon Jovi, while keeping the debut’s momentum, foregrounds harder guitar and higher-intensity choruses. Jon Bon Jovi’s straight singing and Richie Sambora’s guitar give the songs a sure urgency particular to a young band. A record capturing the band’s hot energy, mid-growth just before great success. From the momentum of the opener “In and Out of Love” and the lyrical ballad “Only Lonely” to the classic “Tokyo Road,” which holds special meaning for Japanese fans, the songs already hold a sure melodic strength leading to the later worldwide success, while cuts like “The Hardest Part Is the Night” and “Silent Night” convey the work’s appeal. In particular, “Tokyo Road,” as a song imbued with affection for Japan, is still loved. Its appeal is that one can feel the hot breath particular to being mid-growth, including passages where raw momentum born of youth leads over refined polish. Though still developing, it surely foreshadows the explosive leap of the next Slippery When Wet. Showing Bon Jovi’s early fullness and its process of growth, it is a powerful record.
