『Cell-0』は、APOCALYPTICAがヴォーカリストを招かず、チェロの音色そのものを主役に据えたインストゥルメンタル作品だ。低音の圧力はヘヴィ・メタルのリフに通じ、高音の旋律はクラシックや映画音楽のような広がりを生んでいる。歌もの中心だった時期を経て、バンドが原点である器楽表現へと立ち返った一枚である。 “Ashes of the Modern World”“Cell-0”“Rise”といった楽曲では、静かな緊張から劇的な爆発へと進み、弦楽器だけとは思えないほど大きな景色を描いている。“En Route To Mayhem”“Scream For the Silent”“Beyond the Stars”のような楽曲にも、バンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。約5年ぶりのインストゥルメンタル・アルバムとなった本作でバンドは自らのルーツである純粋な弦楽器表現に回帰しており、“Fire & Ice”“Catharsis”のような楽曲にもバンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。歌に頼らずとも、これほど雄弁でドラマティックな音楽を作り出せることを証明した傑作だ。歌詞や歌メロに頼らず、音の質感、リズム、重なりで物語を作り上げている。集中して聴くほど、細部の表情が見えてくる充実した一枚である。

Cell-0 is an instrumental work on which APOCALYPTICA, inviting no vocalist, placed the cello’s tone itself as the lead. The pressure of the low end connects to heavy-metal riffs, and the high melody creates a breadth like classical or film music. After a period centered on vocal songs, it is a record on which the band returned to their origin — instrumental expression. On “Ashes of the Modern World,” “Cell-0” and “Rise,” they advance from quiet tension to dramatic explosion, drawing scenery so large it is hard to believe it is strings alone. Songs like “En Route To Mayhem,” “Scream For the Silent” and “Beyond the Stars” breathe the band’s full playing too. Without relying on lyrics or vocal melody, they build a story with the texture, rhythm and layering of sound. It is a full record on which, the more you listen with focus, the more the expression of the details comes into view.
