Apocalyptica

『Apocalyptica』は、チェロの深い響きをヘヴィなリフやドラムと結び付け、クラシック的な緊張とロックの推進力を同居させたセルフタイトル作だ。インストゥルメンタルの空気感と、歌を導入した曲の親しみやすさが、自然に交差している。正式ドラマーのミッコ・シレンを迎え、初めてゲスト・ヴォーカルを本格的に導入した一枚である。 “Life Burns!”“Bittersweet”“Quutamo”といった楽曲では、重厚でもメロディの線は明確で、楽器編成の珍しさだけに頼らない強さがある。“Distraction”“Fatal Error”“Ruska”のような楽曲にも、バンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。本作からはヴィレ・ヴァロ（HIM）やラウリ・ユレネン（ザ・ラスマス）といったフィンランドを代表するヴォーカリストが参加しバンドの新たな一面を切り開いており、“Bittersweet”はヴィレ・ヴァロとラウリ・ユレネンの二人が歌う切なくも美しいバラードだ。器楽曲の緊張感と歌ものの叙情性が、見事に共存した一枚である。器楽曲と歌もの、その両方の魅力を一枚に収めている。APOCALYPTICAの表現領域を大きく広げた、ダークで劇的な一枚である。

Apocalyptica is a self-titled work that bound the deep resonance of the cello with heavy riffs and drums, letting classical tension and rock drive coexist. The atmosphere of instrumentals and the accessibility of songs that introduced vocals cross naturally. Welcoming full-time drummer Mikko Sirén, it is a record that first fully introduced guest vocals. On “Life Burns!,” “Bittersweet” and “Quutamo,” even when weighty, the line of the melody is clear, with a strength that does not rely only on the rarity of the instrumentation. Songs like “Distraction,” “Fatal Error” and “Ruska” breathe the band’s full playing too. It holds the appeal of both instrumentals and vocal songs on one record. It is a dark, dramatic record that greatly widened APOCALYPTICA’s expressive range.
