Spiritual Syphilis

Spiritual Syphilis is the debut album by Odio Deus, a black metal trio from Oslo, and its target is the evil that organized religion carries inside it, above all where fanatical leaders are in charge. One song makes the theme concrete: "The Con Man" is about Joseph Smith, the founder of Mormonism, following the manipulation he is accused of, the practices that stirred controversy and his violent end. Musically the record rests on the traditional black metal of Norway and Sweden while borrowing hard from American death metal, and it took roughly two years to grow from an idea into a finished album, with all three members writing together from beginning to end. The drummer Telal started the band in 2020 after years spent in a series of other black metal groups, wanting one in which the music and the lyrical ideas were his to steer. He also plays bass and writes the words, which go after the hypocrisy of organized religion among other subjects; Braatebrann handles guitars, vocals and bass, and Winterheart plays guitar. WormHoleDeath announced the deal in April 2024, released the album worldwide on 7 June that year and published a lyric video for "The Con Man" that August. Nine songs, a little over 47 minutes. More than two years after that release, WormHoleDeath Japan bring it out in Japan on 30 November 2026 as BITX1501, an imported CD with Japanese packaging.
