Liner Notes
Trouble is the first full-length album to define WHITESNAKE clearly as a band. It carries some of the weight associated with David Coverdale’s DEEP PURPLE years, but its core is a tenacious form of blues-rooted hard rock. Micky Moody and Bernie Marsden avoid empty guitar competition, placing thick riffs, flavorful phrases and concise solos where each song needs them. Coverdale likewise does not rely on force alone; he moves from low, conversational delivery to heated shouts, giving the words both texture and conviction.
“Take Me with You” provides a light-footed opening, “Love to Keep You Warm” brings bluesy heat, “Lie Down” supplies an approachable hook, and the title track walks with unmistakable weight. Jon Lord’s keyboards, Neil Murray’s bass and Dave Dowle’s drums thicken the sound without taking away the space around the vocal and guitars. Martin Birch’s production is also essential, preserving a raw, close-up feel that makes the studio album resemble a band playing in a small club. The enormous sound of later WHITESNAKE is not yet present, but Trouble offers something equally valuable: British blues rock’s earthiness and melodic strength living together in the band’s essential starting point.
