Love is the second album on which THE CULT bound post-punk-derived shadow with a bigger-resonating rock drive. Billy Duffy’s guitar makes not only riffs but space, and Ian Astbury’s singing sounds mystery and urgency at once. It is an important breakthrough that brought the band wide recognition. The drive of “Rain” and the breadth of “She Sells Sanctuary” concisely show the band’s distinctive scale. In particular, “She Sells Sanctuary” became an enduring signature song of the band. Songs like “Nirvana,” “Big Neon Glitter” and “Brother Wolf; Sister Moon” breathe the alluring appeal of gothic rock too. Dark yet never losing elation, it is an important record of 1980s British rock.
