LINER NOTES
LANGUAGE
King Animal, the sixth album, came out on Seven Four Entertainment and Universal Republic on 13 November 2012 as B0017683-02. It was the first studio album the band made after re-forming in 2010, and their first in sixteen years, since Down on the Upside in 1996. Adam Kasper, who had co-produced that record, produced it with the band; it was recorded at Studio X and Avast! Recording in Seattle and mixed by Joe Barresi. In March 2011 Chris Cornell said they would start recording in Seattle in about a week.
The band's own site describes the album as rooted in the wild landscape of the Pacific Northwest. It entered the Billboard 200 at number five, the third-highest position of their career behind Superunknown at number one and Down on the Upside at number two. "Been Away Too Long" topped the Mainstream Rock chart for seven weeks and "By Crooked Steps" for two, and Dave Grohl directed the video for the latter.
The Japanese edition (UICI-1113) followed on 14 November 2012 from Universal Music with seventeen tracks: demos of "Worse Dreams", "Black Saturday" and "By Crooked Steps", plus a demo of "Bones of Birds" marked as a Japanese bonus. It is also the last studio album released in Cornell's lifetime. The running order here is the original's as printed.
