Iowa is Slipknot's second album, on which they dug deeper into chaos, heavier and more extreme, pushing out extreme aggression and claustrophobia. After the success of the debut, the band pursued their inner anger and tension even further. Named after their home state, it wears a darkness and heaviness surpassing the previous album. It is a record praised as one of the heaviest among metal albums released in the mainstream. The making of the album proceeded amid extreme internal tension between members, and that taut atmosphere is vividly carved into the sound. Its heaviness, pushed to the limit, has been called legendary by many critics.
Ferocious songs like "People = Shit," "Left Behind" and "The Heretic Anthem" line up. Chaotic percussion and Corey Taylor's screams overwhelm the listener. The album reached No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart and No. 3 in the US. A record where the band's madness and anger are carved most densely, sustaining uncompromising aggression. The 15-minute title track 'Iowa' closes out that darkness. To this day, many fans cite it as the most extreme and important record in the band's history.
