Liner Notes

Stranger in Us All is the final album, on which Ritchie Blackmore restarted Rainbow with a new lineup, tying hard rock to medieval shading. This record, coming a full twelve years later, returns to a darker, more mystical and weighty sound reminiscent of the Dio era. For vocals, the then-unknown Scottish singer Doogie White was chosen. The album was originally conceived as a Blackmore solo record, but was billed under the Rainbow name at the label's wish. Alongside White, new faces gathered, including Greg Smith (bass) and Paul Morris (keyboards). Powerful songs like "Ariel," "Wolf to the Moon" and "Black Masquerade" line up. It also includes "Hall of the Mountain King," a bold arrangement of a piece by Edvard Grieg. Candice Night, who would become Blackmore's wife, took part in backing vocals and songwriting. After this record Rainbow disbanded, and Blackmore formed Blackmore's Night, focused on medieval music. A record of deep flavor, closing out an era. Though a comeback after a long gap, no small number of fans praise it as their finest since Rising.
