Lullabies to Paralyze is the band's fourth album, released by Interscope Records on 22 March 2005 and produced by Joe Barresi and Josh Homme.
Bassist Nick Oliveri was fired before the recording began. Mark Lanegan contributed lyrics and vocals while touring with his own band, and this is his last album as an official member; it is the first for Troy Van Leeuwen and Joey Castillo.
Homme sings and plays guitar, bass, piano, drums and percussion; Van Leeuwen plays guitar, bass, lap steel, piano and keyboards; Alain Johannes plays guitar, bass, flute and marxophone; Lanegan sings lead and backing vocals; Castillo plays drums, piano and percussion. The guests are Chris Goss, Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, Dave Catching, Jack Black, Jesse Hughes, Shirley Manson of Garbage, Brody Dalle of the Distillers and the Main Street Horns.
It reached five on the Billboard 200, the band's first top ten there, and four in Britain, going gold in the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Germany, Belgium and New Zealand. Metacritic scored it 78, AllMusic four and a half stars out of five and Pitchfork 7.5. The closing "Long Slow Goodbye" carries a hidden outro from 5:16. The fourteen songs here are the standard edition's; "Like a Drug" is a deluxe-edition bonus track.
