Liner Notes
Behold Electric Guitar finds Paul Gilbert treating extraordinary technique as part of the music rather than the point of it. Rapid runs, precise picking and difficult fingerings are everywhere, yet the real center is melody: each piece has a clear emotional route, whether it is playful, bright, reflective or slightly wistful. At times the guitar speaks with the excitement of rock and roll; at others, the choice of tone itself becomes the voice.
Riffs, leads and chordal parts constantly exchange roles, creating the feeling of a full band from a single instrument. Distorted push and clean-tone clarity are set against each other with great care, allowing both aggression and lyricism to emerge. This is not a demonstration record or a catalog of guitar tricks. It is an album about the pleasure of picking up an electric guitar, discovering a melodic idea, and following it until it becomes a complete, generous piece of music.
