Liner Notes
Blizzard of Ozz is the landmark debut on which Ozzy Osbourne, fired from Black Sabbath, took his first step as a solo artist. Recorded with the then-unknown Randy Rhoads on guitar alongside Bob Daisley (bass) and Lee Kerslake (drums), the album pairs Rhoads’s classically informed, brilliant phrasing with Ozzy’s uneasy voice, giving it a tension and elegance uncommon in heavy rock to that point. It is one of the most important works of his career, setting the musical direction of his post-Sabbath life.
The racing “Crazy Train” became a signature song synonymous with Ozzy, while the stately “Mr. Crowley” strongly showcases Rhoads’s neoclassical gift. From the lyrical “Goodbye to Romance” to the guitar miniature “Dee” and the heavy “Suicide Solution,” the songs never rely on speed or weight alone, keeping melody and construction at the center. The young Rhoads’s invention and the seasoned conviction of Ozzy’s singing mesh at a high level, completing the blueprint for the solo career to come in a single record. Roughness and refinement live side by side in an immortal starting point etched into heavy-metal history.
