The Initial Impulse

The Initial Impulse turns the cover performances that helped NEMOPHILA gain worldwide attention on YouTube into a focused physical and digital release. The source material—Metallica, System of a Down, Slipknot and Limp Bizkit—maps several essential branches of modern heavy music. NEMOPHILA respects the recognizable architecture of each song, but does more than replace the original performers with an all-female line-up. Mayu’s vocal character, the mass of the twin guitars and the mobility of the rhythm section reshape the material into the band’s own physical language. “Master of Puppets” accepts the challenge of the long-form arrangement and sustained tension. “Sugar” handles abrupt rhythmic and emotional shifts with precision, while “(sic)” makes Tamu Murata’s explosive drumming and Mayu’s harsh delivery impossible to ignore. “Stuck,” featuring N∀OKI and NOBUYA of ROTTENGRAFFTY, turns rap-rock exchange into a collaborative celebration.
