LINER NOTES
LANGUAGE
This is the album that went to number one in the UK and stayed on the chart for forty-one weeks. It was recorded between March and May 1985 at Hansa Tonstudio in Berlin, produced by Chris Kimsey, who had worked with the Rolling Stones, and engineered by Thomas Stiehler. The line-up is Fish on vocals, Steve Rothery on guitar, Mark Kelly on keyboards, Pete Trewavas on bass and Ian Mosley on drums. Each side runs without a break, and the words are built around Fish's own boyhood, a success that arrived suddenly, and a love that did not last. "Kayleigh" reached number 2 in the UK and "Lavender" number 5, so songs written in the grammar of progressive rock became ordinary hits of 1985. No other neo-progressive record succeeded on this scale at the time. The running order here is the original's as printed; Spotify has no plainly-named entity, so the player on this page is the 2017 remaster, whose ten tracks are the original's in the original order.
