Lifelover was formed in Stockholm in June 2005 by Jonas "B" Bergqvist and Kim "( )" Carlsson. A demo recorded that same month, Promo 2005, was never officially released: two long pieces of the pair playing guitars over ambient sound, 28:46 and 24:59, 53 minutes and 45 seconds in all, which the band described as "improvised misery". Recording for this album began in April 2006 and marked a major shift in direction away from that demo. The backing vocalists and lyricists LR and 1853 joined at this time, the album was finished in May and GoatowaRex released it in July. Widely taken for metal, the band cited black metal, post-punk, dark ambient, doom metal and gothic rock among their influences and called their own music "narcotic metal". Asked what that meant, Carlsson told Decibel that "anyone should be able to figure that out or make their own conclusion about it". For their depressive lyrics, playing and atmosphere the band are credited as one of the largest influences on depressive suicidal black metal. Lifelover broke up in September 2011 after Bergqvist's death. The running order here is the original's as printed.
