Parallels is one of the band’s most popular works, on which FATES WARNING kept complex rhythm and long development while making the songs’ outlines clearer around Ray Alder’s singing. Jim Matheos’ guitar layers phrases to create tension and afterglow rather than to show off technique. Without harming its prior experimentalism, the record gained more open melody and hooks, bringing new breadth to the band’s expression. On “Point of View,” “Eye to Eye,” “Life in Still Water” and “We Only Say Goodbye,” the songs stay intellectual without losing an entry point for emotion, ideally balancing memorable choruses with detailed construction. Mark Zonder’s drums combine complexity and stability, giving the work firm drive. As one culmination on which progressive metal joined constructive beauty with accessibility at a high level, it is still widely loved as a signature work of the band.
