Liner Notes
A Pleasant Shade of Gray is an ambitious, deeply experimental work on which FATES WARNING fully depicted anxiety, solitude and quiet elation through one long song made of several movements. The roughly fifty-minute whole connects without a break, and delicate clean guitar, heavy riffs and restrained singing build drama through changes of breath rather than sudden turns. Jim Matheos’ conception and Ray Alder’s expressiveness crystallize splendidly within the long form.
Divided into twelve movements (Part I–XII), the piece carefully travels between quiet space, tension and release, leading the listener into a single deep experience. Because the construction does not seek immediacy, the afterglow when heard as a whole is very deep. Perfectly realized as a long-form work that never separates technique from emotion, it is a particularly important record in the career that greatly widened the expressive possibilities of progressive metal. Its quiet journey through solitude and renewal brings new discoveries with each listen.
