LINER NOTES
LANGUAGE
This is the third album, made after LG Petrov, who had sung on the debut, returned. It is built differently from the two records before it: the foundation is still death metal, but the vocabulary of hard rock and heavy metal has been brought into it. The mid-tempo groove it runs on has often been discussed alongside Pantera of the same period. The approach came to be called death 'n' roll.
The title has nothing to do with the Marvel Comics character of that name. It comes from James Ellroy's novel The Big Nowhere, in which a serial killer identifies himself with the animal.
It was well received on release. Guitar World called it the best death metal record of 1994 and quite possibly the finest of the decade. In 2005 Rock Hard placed it at number 494 in its book The 500 Greatest Rock & Metal Albums of All Time. The running order here is the British original's as printed.
