Liner Notes
Renatus, whose title is Latin for “rebirth,” is the pivotal album on which Dynazty renewed its sound from the ground up. Made after signing with Spinefarm Records and with a new lineup adding Mikael Lavér (guitar) and Jonathan Olsson (bass), it broke from 1980s hard rock and turned decisively toward a modern melodic/power metal with machine-gun riffing and firm rhythms. The lyrics too shifted from themes of partying and freedom to deeper concerns with mortality, spirituality and religious imagery.
The drive of “Cross the Line” declares the album's new direction, and the single “Starlight” vividly demonstrates the union of sharpness and melody. On “The Northern End,” “Salvation” and “A Divine Comedy,” intricate arrangement joins huge choruses, achieving a construction beyond mere speed or weight. Nils Molin's soaring voice delivers each chorus clearly even over complex riffs. Critically acclaimed and foundational for the Dynazty that followed, it is one of the most important works of their career.
