Liner Notes
Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory is a monumental concept work on which Dream Theater splendidly binds complex rhythm, fluid, virtuosic solos and striking vocal melody into one grand story. As the sequel to the classic “Metropolis Pt. 1,” it draws a dramatic story around hypnotherapy and memories of a past life. It is also the first work of the new lineup, welcoming Jordan Rudess on keyboards. Each song, while extremely technical, has its melody make a clear path so the characters’ emotions and the shifting scenes can be firmly followed.
From “Scene Two: Strange Déjà Vu” and the speeding “Scene Four: Beyond This Life” to the moving classic ballad “Scene Eight: The Spirit Carries On,” every song is engaging, while cuts like “Scene Seven: Home” and “Scene Three: Fatal Tragedy” convey the work’s grand world. In particular, “The Spirit Carries On” became a moving classic representing the band. A record on which, despite the long, precise construction, the arrangement of tension, quiet and explosion is extremely deft, and the whole picture comes vividly into view the more you listen through. Outstanding playing technique and deep drama fuse as splendidly as possible. An enduring, powerful, engaging masterpiece that is one ideal form of the concept album and represents the genre — an essential record for fans.
