LINER NOTES
LANGUAGE
After the previous album, drummer Bill Andrews and bassist Terry Butler toured Europe without Chuck Schuldiner. He had refused to go, thinking the tour badly organised. The dispute ended in court, and from then on Schuldiner made records with invited players rather than a fixed band. This is the first time he did it.
The musicians he called in were Paul Masvidal on guitar and Sean Reinert on drums, both from Cynic, and Steve Di Giorgio on bass. With those three the technical bent that had been visible on the previous record moves right to the front. Odd metres are used throughout and the songs stop settling into a steady pulse. The words turn inward, away from the outward accusation of before.
Di Giorgio left after the recording and Scott Carino took his place on tour; he would return for Individual Thought Patterns. What is now called technical death metal has been discussed against this album ever since. The running order here is the original's as printed.
