LINER NOTES
LANGUAGE
Guitarist Zephyrous had left the year before, and this record was made by two people: Nocturno Culto and Fenriz. Fenriz played every instrument and Culto added the vocals. As of 2024 only this album and Panzerfaust were made that way.
It was recorded on a four-track machine set up in Fenriz's bedroom, which the band called Necrohell Studios. The lyrics for four of the eight songs were written by Varg Vikernes, who recorded on his own as Burzum. The sleeve is a black-and-white photograph of Fenriz holding a candelabrum; the back cover carries the line "Darkthrone is for all the evil in man" and the slogan "True Norwegian Black Metal".
Another line had been planned for that back cover and was withdrawn after objections from distributors. A statement prepared for the release also caused offence, and the band issued a formal apology at Peaceville's request. This is the third of the three albums called the unholy trinity, with A Blaze in the Northern Sky and Under a Funeral Moon, and in 2017 Rolling Stone placed it at number 85 in The 100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Time. The running order here is the original's as printed.
