LINER NOTES
LANGUAGE
The songs were written in Buffalo, New York. Most of the band were out of work at the time and rehearsed almost daily; guitarist Jack Owen and bassist Alex Webster shared the forty-five-minute drive to the practice room. Where the previous album, Butchered at Birth, had been written together, this one was assembled from pieces each of them wrote alone. The opening "Hammer Smashed Face" came out of Webster's efforts to improve as a bass player.
It was recorded over two weeks in February 1992 at Morrisound Recording in Tampa, Florida, with Scott Burns producing — the first album for which the band had the budget to keep long hours in a studio. Burns saw how differently the two guitarists played and had Owen track every rhythm part. Bob Rusay therefore plays no rhythm guitar on the record at all, and some of the lead work he did record was replaced.
The sleeve painting is by Vince Locke, and it is what made the album notorious. Rusay was dismissed after its release and Rob Barrett of Malevolent Creation took his place. The running order here is the original's as printed.
