LINER NOTES
LANGUAGE
This is the record on which a hardcore band from Washington, D.C. stepped outside hardcore. It was recorded at Long View Farm, produced by Ron Saint Germain and engineered by Phil Burnett, and SST Records released it in 1986.
The line-up is H.R. on vocals, Dr. Know on guitar, Darryl Jenifer on bass and Earl Hudson on drums. Fast hardcore songs sit on the same record as reggae, funk and heavy metal riffing, and Dr. Know's guitar is closer to metal's grammar than anyone else's in hardcore at the time.
H.R.'s vocal on "Sacred Love" was recorded down a telephone line from prison, where he was being held on a marijuana charge; the producer, Saint Germain, is the one who suggested it. Rage Against the Machine and Living Colour are among the bands that have named this album since. The running order here is the original's as printed.
