Arise!

This is the album on which a band out of British anarcho-punk defined the sound later called crust. It was produced by Jason Rosenberg and released by Alternative Tentacles in September 1985. The line-up is Rob Miller on bass and vocals, Chris Miller on guitar, George Fletcher on keyboards and Robert Richards on drums. Building on the slowness of Black Sabbath rather than the speed of punk, and pushing a distorted bass to the front, is what gives the record its character. The opener "The Moor" is an instrumental quoting Ligeti's Requiem, unusually long for a way into an album. "Largactyl" takes its title from the trade name of an antipsychotic, and was written out of a former drummer's diagnosis. Sepultura, Neurosis and Gallhammer are among the bands that have named it since. The running order here is the original's as printed; Spotify has no plainly-named entity for it, so the player on this page is the 2014 remaster with a 1985 live set appended.
